‘All those little things – make sure you do them’: The striker’s path from injury table to success with the Basque club
Whenhe debut appearance Gorka Guruzeta featured in England, an teenage representing the youth squad against German opponents at Wycombe’s stadium in September 2015, he hit the target. On his next visit he took the field in the country, against the Black Cats following that, he converted. His third outing, against Manchester City six weeks after that, sure enough, he scored again. When he returned to Manchester to play against the Red Devils at Leigh Sports Village in 2017, he scored again. A spectacular strike, too. “Truly,” he says, “it ranks among my finest in my career.” Therefore the team did what they had to do: they substituted him.
“I became very upset,” the attacker admits, and then he starts laughing. “There must be a video somewhere. We went to play United and I was pretty good. They kept me out of the second half: my contract wasn’t finalized deal, I was scoring goals, there were lots of rumours, as you’d expect. I don’t know about the Magpies’ pursuit, but I came across reports about Manchester United, the typical thing. It’s unclear how true it was, but even if they had called, I’d have chosen to stay at Bilbao. I feel lucky to be here.”
Real Sociedad release pressure with surreal victory in Basque derby like no other
At the facility, the Basque Country, the morning session is ready to commence; post-session, the quick travel to Loiu and another trip to England, on this occasion to take on the Magpies in the Champions League on Wednesday. Uttering the name makes Guruzeta smile. This is proving a tough year for Athletic, partially owing to the pressures of competing at this level. Losing in stoppage time in the weekend clash, they have secured just a single victory of their recent league fixtures and been defeated by Arsenal and the German side in the continental stage. Yet, take in the big picture, the major occasions he’s experienced and upcoming events, and he feels a calm gratitude within him.
In the 36 months since he had rejoined the team, the striker has been a final four contender in Europe, stopped at the gates the showpiece event by United, and has traveled on a traditional boat through the waterway surrounded by a huge crowd after winning the Copa del Rey, the first title in 40 years. He’s now Athletic’s top scorer in the European competition, where they are countercultural and returning after absence in ten years. “I never imagined this,” he states.
The player believed it challenging enough just to earn a spot and that proved true. As the child of the one-time rival player his father and a regular attendee at the opposition side, Gorka is a graduate of Antiguoko, the local academy that developed the Arsenal manager, the legendary midfielder and Andoni Iraola. He signed for Athletic at 17 but after making his senior debut in that summer, he experienced a torn cruciate, the cut, a relegation and a call back before he could earn his place, making his comeback to experience the peak of his career.
“Entering the youth system doubting you’ll make the top level but every phase you advance through you’re persisting and you can see it getting closer. You arrive and then … you have to leave.” He featured briefly in six matches in six games between his first game and early 2019. “Then I was sent to the filial [Bilbao Athletic, the Under-23s]. Five, six games with them and I tear my cruciate.
“It was a huge blow but I look back on it as something positive because it made me change the outlook. Recovering from a long-term injury is difficult, but it’s beneficial. You develop habits you didn’t have. Previously I was casual, but I attended practice and then head home, typical youth behavior. At the complex, you have everything, so utilize it all. Work, precaution. Get in the gym. With hip imbalance, work on that. If your ankles are a 10, enhance it further. All those ‘silly things’: execute them.
“In the first team you’re going to collide with opponents who have experienced contact 200,000 times. Highly robust. Seeing previous pictures: I had slender legs. Thus incidents occur. Look at pictures of me now and the improvement is clear. The setback taught me. Practice concludes, but further effort is needed. Teammates are set, really ready; no exceptions.”
Game time is essential. He left emotionally in the pandemic season, aged 23, moving to a lower level. With Sabadell in 2020-21, he got three strikes in numerous matches. During his Amorebieta stint in the following period, the he found his form. “Many experience this: loans, terminated contracts. With a turnaround, dedication, confidence, and should the time come they need someone where you play, a return could happen. Readiness is vital. When the opportunity came, a fantasy realized. The trophy success, European football, and make the UCL … pfff.”
Little surprise he states this is to be enjoyed. All the more so after last year which, sometimes, was focused on persistence. Previously the main threat with sixteen goals, he managed seven in {15 games more|additional matches|
