Gavin Newsom Confirms He Is Weighing a Presidential Campaign for 2028

Gavin Newsom, a prominent member of the Democratic party, has disclosed that he will make a decision about whether to launch a presidential campaign in 2028 after the 2026 midterm elections are over.

"Yes, it would be dishonest if I said no," the governor stated when pressed about giving serious thought to a campaign for president after the 2026 elections. "That wouldn't be honest. And I'm not."

Newsom's current term as governor wraps up in January 2027, and term limits prevent another run. Yet, he emphasized that any determination is still years away.

"Fate will determine that," he added.

Growing Prominence as a Political Adversary

Newsom has emerged as a prominent opponent of the former president's team, leveraging his digital presence and championing a proposition that would expand the party's representation in Congress in as a counter to redistricting by Republicans. This strategy has drawn criticism from adversaries.

Federal Funding Dispute

The former president's transportation chief, Sean Duffy, alleged that Newsom shows no concern about Californians in a recent appearance on a major news network. Duffy revealed plans to pull taxpayer dollars from the state and suggested suspending the authority to grant commercial driver's licenses.

"I intend to cut $160m from the state," he stated, in the wake of a this week's deadly accident in California involving an unauthorized commercial driver that resulted in fatalities and casualties.

The governor's team highlighted that the national authorities had reauthorized the individual's authorization multiple times, which allowed him to obtain a CDL under U.S. law.

Duffy had before stated he was holding back additional funds from the state for failing to implement linguistic standards for truck drivers.

Pointed Reply from the Administration

"One-time television figure, now Secretary of Transportation, fails to grasp national statutes," his administration responded in a previous statement addressing Duffy's threats. "Meanwhile, as opposed to this individual, we focus on reality: The state's CDL holders had a accident mortality rate nearly 40% lower than the national average. The state of Texas – the only state with additional licensed drivers – has a rate markedly elevated than California. Statistics are clear. This administration is dishonest."

Voter Sentiment and Campaign Considerations

A this month's poll revealed that 72% of Democrats and 48% of all registered voters believed that the governor should run for president in 2028. After the current administration began, Newsom's favorability has increased to an mean of about one-third from around 30%, while his unfavorability has fallen from an mean of previous highs to 38.4%.

In previous months, Newsom commented while on a trip several key regions that he had "no idea" about his future for 2028.

He also referenced his past difficulties, including being identified as dyslexic at the age of five.

"The notion that a person who scored 960 on the SAT, who has ongoing difficulties with text, who was typically not at the front – that such a possibility is discussed is, in and of itself, remarkable," he commented. "No one can say? I am eager to see who steps forward in the next election and who meets that moment. And that remains the key point for the U.S. citizens."
