Information Available Regarding the Victims of the Bondi Beach Terrorist Incident
A minimum of 16 people were killed and over 40 were wounded when gunmen opened fire at a Hanukah event at Bondi Beach, an incident Australian police have labeled a act of terrorism.
According to the most recent information, authorities have confirmed the death toll remains at 16, encompassing one of the alleged gunmen. Additionally, 42 people with injuries were transported to medical facilities.
Those who died have not yet been officially identified, but investigators think their ages range between 10 and 87 years old.
Listed are the victims who have been identified to date.
Eli Schlanger
London-born rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.
Known as a father of five children, he served as the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Relatives and acquaintances remembered him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very kind and sociable person who was dedicated to assisting others”.
“How is it possible that a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a relative asked.
Schlanger and his wife celebrated the arrival of their youngest child just a few months ago.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, as stated by his wife.
She told the moments leading up to the shooting, explaining they were standing when the shooting erupted. “He pushed his body up because he wished to be near me,” she said.
The couple were both Holocaust survivors, having faced immense hardship in their childhood. They had later relocated to Australia from Ukraine.
Dan Elkayam
French authorities have announced that French man Dan Elkayam is a casualty.
In a statement, the Foreign Minister declared that France stood with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This despicable act is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must eradicate,” the statement continued.
One Child
A child who was taken to the a children's hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, according to police reports.
One Israeli Citizen
A national of Israel was also killed during the attack, according to multiple sources referencing the Israeli government.
Those Injured
Of the 42 people taken to hospital, many are still under care, with a number in serious condition. Those hurt include two police officers who attended the scene.
A casualty is a bystander who rushed to the scene to confront one of the gunmen. Called a hero, he received gunshot wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. It has been reported he was wounded and is receiving treatment in hospital.
Communicating, he recounted the incident as an “utter carnage,” but also noted the actions of those who came to assist. He stated he believed it was a “stroke of luck” he survived.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was also injured in the shooting. He said he heard “dozens and dozens” of shots.
“Initially, I believed it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I’ve been shot myself. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
