Weather experts are saying a chilly commencement to the new year, with snowfall anticipated over large parts of the UK. Celebrants are advised to dress warmly as near-freezing temperatures are forecast for New Year's Eve.
Celebratory Events Go Ahead In Spite of Forecasts
Edinburgh's iconic Hogmanay celebrations are planned to proceed, a contrast to last year's postponement. This proceeds amid weather alerts for snow over northern Scotland.

As we enter Friday, weather warnings have been issued across Northern Ireland and stretching from Wales, over the north-west, the West Midlands and all the way to London and the majority of the south-east of England.

Readings Expected to Drop Even More
With the start of 2026, it will be "chilly no matter where you are," commented forecaster Simon Partridge. Temperatures are set to drop further as snowfall and high winds are predicted to hit the north of the country.
Around 10cm of snow could accumulate to have accumulated in some areas by Friday morning, potentially hitting 30cm on the most elevated routes and peaks.
Medical Advisories Activated
Meanwhile, amber cold health alerts have been activated for the north-east and north-west of England. These are expected to continue until noon on 5 January, with the mercury expected to fall to between 3C and 5C.
Officials explained this indicated the weather could to trigger major effects across health and social care services. This includes a potential rise in the fatality numbers among those with health conditions or those aged 65 or over.
