Preparations for Trump-Putin Meeting Postponed Shortly Following Hungarian Capital Negotiations Suggested

Currently exist "no preparations" for American leader Donald Trump to confer with Russian President Vladimir Putin "in the immediate future", a administration representative has stated.

Recently the US president indicated he and the Russian president would conduct negotiations in Hungary's capital in the coming fortnight to examine the war in Ukraine.

A planning session between America's top diplomat Marco Rubio and his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov was due to be held this week - but the White House said the two had had a "constructive" conversation and that a face-to-face session was no longer "required".

The administration did not share additional specifics on the reason the negotiations had been delayed.

Previous Developments

The US president had discussed a Budapest summit during a call with the Russian leader, a day before hosting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in the Oval Office.

Certain accounts suggested his talks with the Ukrainian leader had been a "shouting match", with insiders claiming Trump had urged him to give up large areas of Ukraine's east as part of a deal with Moscow.

However, on Monday Trump supported a peace initiative backed by Ukraine and EU officials to pause the hostilities on the present positions.

"Let it be cut in its current state," he said.

Moscow has consistently objected against pausing the current line of contact.

Moscow was solely focused on "long-term, sustainable peace", Russia's foreign minister stated on Tuesday, indicating that pausing conflict would only amount to a brief pause.

Diplomatic Positions

The "root causes" of the hostilities demanded attention, the Russian diplomat emphasized, using Moscow's terminology for a set of comprehensive conditions that include the acknowledgment of complete Moscow control over the eastern region as well as the demilitarisation of the country – a unacceptable proposition for Kyiv and its Western allies.

The Ukrainian president commented talks regarding the current lines were the "beginning of diplomacy" but that Moscow was "taking all measures" to avoid diplomacy.

He also said the exclusive issue that could cause Russia to "pay attention" was that of the provision of long-range weapons to the Ukrainian military.

Military Considerations

The Russian president's unplanned conversation with the US leader recently came ahead of reports that the US was planning to provide distance-capable weapons to Ukrainian forces that could possibly hit Russian territory.

Zelensky asserted it was the Tomahawks issue that had pressured the Kremlin to enter into dialogue. The talk about the missiles had turned out to be a "significant input" in diplomacy", he added.
