Following a week of significant rainfall that resulted in floodwaters across sections of the city, the City of Angels is now seeing unseasonably high conditions for this time of year.
Record-Shattering Temperatures
During the day Friday, the mercury reached ninety-one degrees Fahrenheit in central LA, as reported by weather officials. This exceeds the old record for February 27th, which was eighty-eight degrees Fahrenheit and was set in 2025.
"Very warm conditions" were noted on forecast graphics for the region.
Safety Warnings
Forecasters issued a warning that Friday's heat posed an "higher threat for heat illness" for those at risk. Their guidance suggested:
- Drinking plenty of fluids.
- Avoiding outdoor activities during the peak heat of the day.
- Ensuring you do not leave children or pets unattended in a hot car.
A Dramatic Weather Swing
This sudden spike in temperature arrives just after a intense winter storm that struck the area last week. That system delivered high winds, thunderstorms, and significant snowfall to mountainous regions, leading to flash flood warnings for many residents.
Tragically, the storm also triggered a massive avalanche in the Lake Tahoe area, which resulted in nine fatalities.
Temperatures Easing
The outlook suggests a cooldown is coming. Readings were forecast to drop to around 61°F (16°C) in the city by Friday night.
Other locales that reached 90°F featured Burbank, Woodland Hills, and Long Beach. Elsewhere, Oxnard, Westwood, Camarillo, and Santa Maria were projected to experience the upper eighties.
In the coming days, central Los Angeles can expect weather in the eighties, with mid-70s temperatures likely for the week ahead.
