The Contents of that Briefcase Henry Opens in Stranger Things?
During the bulk of the concluding season of the popular Netflix show, Holly Wheeler and Max Mayfield are held captive within a psychic prison forged from the past of the villain Henry. Their mission for a way out in "Escape from Camazotz" has them experience a traumatic incident from Henry's childhood—a moment that potentially carries the secret to his downfall once and for all.
Spoiler Warning: The following contains major spoilers for the concluding episodes.
A Journey Into the Cavern
After locating Max in the psychic realm dubbed Camazotz, it becomes clear she is sheltering in a grotto that Henry avoids at all costs. An accidental discovery a telescope pilfered from Henry's old home helps Holly understand that the true terror lies not within the cave. By aligning her view to the cut-out, she and Max tumble into a subterranean passage.
There, they witness a child version of Henry encounter an man who is hurt and scared. As the boy offers aid, the man reacts violently, hitting him in the hand. In a desperate act of self-defense, Henry kills the man with a rock. "Is this what corrupted him?" Holly wonders aloud. The answer is affirmative, but the act went deeper than a fight for life.
Like many elements in volume 2, the full story behind the encounter is detailed in the theatrical production the prequel play.
A Naval Mystery and Secret Science
This backstory explains the legendary naval test, which transported a warship into a realm dubbed the Abyss. It faced creatures, and the sole survivor was the captain, who returned in a vegetative state with an entirely new blood.
This man's son, Martin Brenner, attempted to recreate this dimensional breach in the Nevada desert. One of his scientists stole research materials to hand over to the Russian agents, who were keen to start their version of the tests. The man in the cavern was that very thief.
The Briefcase's Contents
Given what is understood of his research, the container most likely held some of the unique blood type. In the scene, Henry is bleeding from his hand. He likely becomes contaminated upon handling the contents, causing the development of his psychic abilities—powers he would inadvertently transfer to the test subjects Brenner would experiment on.
A second theory, the case could have held dark matter that was destined to travel to the secret facility, where it maintains the stability of the Upside Down. The stage play explains that the boy somehow wound up in the Abyss, reappearing 12 hours later with a new blood type and personality. Throughout the play, he struggles with the influence of a dark entity, reminiscent of how the character Will was controlled by the Mind Flayer in an earlier season.
The Power of Fear
The reason Henry avoids the cave associated with the mine shows how deeply scarring the event was for him. Even as he orchestrates the collective consciousness and attempts to pull the Abyss into Hawkins, a fragment of his psyche still exists. Vecna uses fear, and the show is setting up a showdown between him and Will, who has confronted his greatest terrors to gain strength.
This journey has taken a weapon from Vecna. More importantly, Will now knows what the monster's own weakness, potentially giving him a key upper hand in the series finale that awaits.
