The Eurovision Song Contest Was Traditionally a Lighthearted Spectacle – But It Has Become a Strategic Method to Sanitize Conflict.
An new initialism surfaced a few months into the military campaign against Gaza. Referred to as WCNSF, it means “Wounded child, no surviving family”. This designation is unique to Gaza, per insights from doctors like paediatricians. Normally, it is uncommon for physicians to treat a young patient who has seen the death of their entire family. But, there has been nothing “normal” concerning the genocide in Gaza, where complete genealogies have been eradicated and the number of young amputees surpasses that of any other region in the world. Nothing normal about many doctors coming back from a devastated terrain with testimonies of children being intentionally shot at.
A Hell on Earth In Spite Of a Announced Cessation of Hostilities
Conditions in Gaza persist as hell on earth. Vital medicines and equipment are failing to reach those in need, and international watchdogs have stated that atrocities are ongoing. Officials rejects these allegations, consistent with how it refutes each claim it is charged with. But while grieving children who lost parents are now enduring frigid conditions in makeshift tent camps, there is some ostensibly positive news: nothing is going to stop the international singing competition from continuing with its stated mission of “togetherness and cultural exchange.” Organizers will continue to extend a prestigious stage for Israel, although several European countries have now boycotted in dissent. Because this, it seems, is what unity resembles.
The contest, notably excluded Russia from competing in 2022 over the “unprecedented crisis in Ukraine”. Yet the conflict in Gaza is completely different.
Contradictory Principles
Forget the fact that Israel was criticized for questionable voting tactics last year in what appears to have been an effort to manipulate Eurovision. Forget the fact that a toddler was allegedly fatally struck in Gaza recently. Neglect the data that settler violence and forced displacement in the West Bank have surged. Forget the fact that international journalists are still denied unfettered access in Gaza. All of this, apparently, should be permitted to obstruct of Eurovision’s self-proclaimed spirit of unity.
The Show Goes On While Ignoring Staggering Tragedy
The contest turns 70 next year – nearly twice the current lifespan of a person in Gaza at present. The show may go on, but it will find it impossible to reclaim the camp joy it was formerly known for. A contest that once promoted peace has now become a blatant mechanism to sanitize military aggression.
