The Fashion Icon Antony Price, Renowned for Styling David Bowie and Duran Duran, Dies at 80.
Fashion legend Antony Price, the groundbreaking style architect responsible for some of the most iconic looks favored by David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen Camilla, has sadly died aged 80.
His reputation was built on his defined forms and theatrical styles, such as the soft-colored suits that appeared in the iconic band Duran Duran's classic music video for "their hit Rio".
"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance online."
This news arrives less than a month after he unveiled his latest collection in London, his first in more than 30 years. Singer Lily Allen showcased a dress evoking the notorious black velvet "dress" historically worn by Princess Diana.
An Enduring Influence
Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price relocated to London during the sixties to enroll at the renowned Royal College of Art.
Upon completing his studies, he commenced his career designing menswear at the company Stirling Copper and was responsible for the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger famously wore during the iconic group's "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.
He founded his own label in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show featured as its opener looks from the famed model Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the marriage dress Price designed for her for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.
Collaborations with Icons
A key creative partner of David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the distinctive jacket the artist wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His characteristic talent to blend elements of men's and women's fashion along with his masterful technique in designing body-hugging looks made him a "true original," in the words of the British Fashion Council.
During the nineties, he started creating pieces for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, including several ensembles for her US tour following her marriage.
Following a profession lasting more than five decades, Price staged what would be his last show in London recently in collaboration with the design house 16Arlington.
