The musician gives his £25k prize cash award to independent concert halls

Sam Fender won the Mercury Prize recently in Newcastle

The star has handed over the complete sum of his twenty-five thousand pound Mercury Prize winnings to the Music Venues Trust, which functions to preserve the Britain's grassroots music venues.

Fender was given the award on October 16 as his third album his work was named the outstanding release of the past year.

Fender has opted to donate the funds to the Music Venues Trust, in recognition of the vital role small stages had in his early career.

"I wouldn't be doing this success if it wasn't for all the gigs I did around the area, and elsewhere, when I was starting out," said Sam Fender. "These venues are renowned, but they are struggling."

Beginning in 2023, over 150 of these venues have ceased operations – about 16% of the whole industry in the UK.

In the last year, top acts like Pulp, Coldplay, Katy Perry and Sheeran have all backed the trust in its initiatives to keep the scene afloat, by adding a modest fee to their ticket costs, which supports independent venues.

Sam Fender also joined in, generating in excess of £100,000 on his 2024 arena tour to support thirty-eight small stages across Britain.

The money helped locations that were confronting potential shutdown due to issues caused by flooding, fire incidents and bereavements, as well as regulatory hurdles, legal disputes and sound issues.

Other venues received monetary aid in upgrading amenities and sound and lighting systems that positively impacted artists and concertgoers.

"The idea that revenue from concerts in major spaces backs the smaller venues, where it kicks off for performers like me, is just sensible," Fender has stated.

Fender is among several artists to donate his honor winnings to worthy causes.

Back when Pulp received the trophy in 1996 for their album Different Class, frontman Cocker announced that the group would contribute their cash to the charity the charity.

In 2002, rapper and singer Ms Dynamite split her award across a few organizations, like the NSPCC and a charity for Sickle Cell.

"And I donated a thousand pounds to Highgate Newtown, to their gymnastics program, because I practiced gymnastics when I was younger and they lacked better apparatus," Ms Dynamite shared with the media.

Two years ago, the band gave their prize money to the youth organization that nurtured their act, alongside other independent music bodies.

Additionally winners that year the group gave their award to a charity for MS after a friend was identified with the illness.

"The victory was quite enough," remarked singer Heather Small. "The money was the extra but we didn't require the cherry, because we had the honor. So our winning affected the lives of others."

In the past week, the MVT shared it had protected several small stages in that region, by transferring them to public stewardship.

One venue in the city and the second in that location were bought under the public acquisition program, which is backed by a national body and music fans who acquire "ownership units" in the venues.
