We are verifying images and video shared this morning that depict the scene of a reported vehicle-borne explosive explosion that Russian officials state fatally injured a senior soldier in Moscow.
Officials in Russia stated that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was in the vehicle that detonated and that he later died of his wounds. An investigation is under way.
The initial step to verify the location of where the pictures originated relied on posts indicating the explosion occurred on Yasenevaya Street in the southern district of the Russian capital.
We used street-view imagery on digital map platforms and the local mapping service Yandex to corroborate the unique yellow colour of a adjacent residential complex seen in the video.
Identifying additional structures, streetlights and the road configuration verified the exact location the pictures were captured.
We also checked that the videos were new and that the images had not been manipulated.
