Walmart Introduces Purchase Limits on Pokémon Trading Cards
In a significant move, Walmart has started implementing strict limits on how many Pokémon trading card items customers can acquire during one shopping trip. This new rule was activated starting November 5th, based on an internal announcement distributed to employees.
Tackling Reseller Problems
While not officially confirmed by Walmart, many believe this decision was influenced by a viral TikTok video that showed a customer buying a massive amount of Pokémon card items at a checkout counter. The store manager featured in the video faced widespread backlash for allowing the large-scale transaction to proceed.
Rule Specifics and Possible Weaknesses
The new restriction states that shoppers may only buy a maximum of five trading card packs or boxes per store visit. Yet, the wording has sparked debate due to its lack of clarity. Precisely what qualifies as a "box" is not defined, and whether someone could buy five high-value Elite Trainer Boxes is uncertain.
Additionally, since the limit is tied to individual trips, in theory an eager reseller could return repeatedly—purchasing the maximum each time—to gather large quantities over several hours.
The Scalping Phenomenon
For the average collector, this approach might seem excessive, yet for resellers, it's standard practice. Over the past few seasons, scalpers have significantly added to widespread shortages of Pokémon cards, spurred by the TCG's growing fame.
Some resellers seek to resell sealed items at a markup, whereas some hunt for rare cards that can command extraordinary prices. For instance, the Mega Lucario ex card from the latest set is currently selling at prices exceeding eight hundred dollars on various platforms.
Looking Ahead
The new rule aligns with the imminent release of the latest Pokémon expansion, scheduled for November 14th. Pre-release sales already show premium cards like the Charizard mega evolution listed for nearly $1,500, highlighting the ongoing demand and likely scalper target.
